Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area – Wastewater Collection System Improvements

Project overview

EBMUD is upgrading the wastewater collection system that serves the Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area at 3849 Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Lafayette, California. Work will replace aging infrastructure, improve reliability, and support compliance with public health and environmental regulations. Construction is planned from fall 2025 through fall 2026. The recreation area will remain open.

The Lafayette Reservoir is one of five East Bay reservoirs managed by the East Bay Municipal Utility District. The reservoir is a popular recreation area that provides public access to protected watershed lands. The Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area Wastewater Collection System Improvements project will upgrade aging components and reduce the risk of failures that can lead to restroom closures and costly maintenance.

Scope of work

Core replacements:

  • Replace the existing sanitary sewer lift station and associated piping that convey wastewater from the Visitor Center, Ranger Residence, and Maintenance Building.
  • Install a new backup generator and fuel tank to maintain service during power interruptions.
  • Add a radio tower for reliable system communications.

Site improvements:

  • Replace a portion of the retaining wall along the roadway to enhance safety.
  • Improve access for maintenance while protecting the surrounding environment.
  • These upgrades will improve reliability, reduce unplanned outages, and support compliance with public health and environmental regulations.

Schedule

Fall 2025 to Fall 2026.

Dates are subject to change based on weather, material availability, and field conditions. EBMUD will communicate any significant changes in advance.

Public access during construction

The recreation area will remain open to visitors during construction. For safety and community awareness, EBMUD will:

  • Post signage, including an electronic message board at the entrance, before construction begins to inform visitors about anticipated work.
  • Maintain a twelve-foot travel lane for fire and park access at all times. Flaggers will be onsite for single lane traffic control when needed.
  • Keep sidewalks open whenever it is safe to do so. If a pedestrian route must be closed, alternate routes and clear signage will be provided.
