Education resources

In 1978, EBMUD began an education outreach program so that students can learn about where their water comes from and how it flows through EBMUD's water system while delivering quality drinking water and protecting public health and the environment. Students can learn about conservation, pollution prevention and watershed stewardship with our educational tools and field trips.

EBMUD offers classroom materials in English and Spanish for K-12 students, outdoor classroom programs from November to April, summer internships and wastewater treatment plant tours.

Order free classroom materials

EBMUD provides student and teacher workbooks for free to public and private schools in EBMUD's service area, in parts of Contra Costa and Alameda counties and near EBMUD's Sierra foothills facilities within Amador and Calaveras counties, Lodi and Linden. Order free classroom materials at EBMUD's online store.

EBMUD has free workbooks available designed for K-2, 3rd-6th and 7th-12th grades. The workbooks can be tied to state curriculum guidelines.

Tour EBMUD's Wastewater Treatment Plant

Find out what happens to the dirty water from your toilet, shower and laundry after it goes down the drain--take a tour of EBMUD’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. East Bay residents and students in middle and high school are invited to tour EBMUD’s Wastewater Treatment Plant in Oakland. Sign up for a tour.

Outdoor classrooms on watershed stewardship

Register your students for an outdoor excursion, where EBMUD's ranger-naturalists host classrooms on our watershed to educate students about creek restoration, reforestation and natural history programs. Outdoor classes are offered November through April on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Science fairs

EBMUD is proud to participate in the Alameda County and Contra Costa County Science Fairs through the “Excellence in Water and Wastewater Research Awards.” Students and teachers who decide to explore a water-related topic can compete for special cash prizes ($100 to $400) and recognition from the Agencies in which they live.

This program was developed by a coalition of Alameda County and Contra Costa County water and wastewater agencies in 2013 to recognize outstanding student projects in the world of water.
