Climate change can affect every aspect of EBMUD’s work, from the resilience of our water supply to the health of the lands we manage.

The home stretch of California’s rainy season is upon us, and our eyes are on the sky. We’re tracking weather patterns, measuring rainfall and snowpack, and forecasting the runoff we expect to capture in our reservoirs.

Salmon are jumping and records are breaking at EBMUD’s Mokelumne River Hatchery at the base of Camanche Dam. This year’s fall run of spawning Chinook salmon crossed the 20,000 mark for the first time since data collection began on the Mokelumne in 1940, surpassing the previous record of 19,962 set in 2017.

Rainfall refreshes our watersheds and replenishes our reservoirs. But winter storms also pose unique challenges to the robust wastewater treatment EBMUD provides to protect the health of San Francisco Bay. Fortunately, we’re at the ready, rain or shine.

How many gallons of water do you use in a typical day? More than 90 percent of EBMUD customers say they either don’t know or estimate they use less than 30 gallons a day, according to a recent survey. In fact, the average East Bay customer uses around 50 gallons a day for drinking, cooking, bathing, dishwashing and laundry. (That doesn’t even take outdoor watering into account.)

EBMUD delivers this clean, crisp mountain water to 1.4 million people living in 46 cities and towns in the East Bay. We make sure every drop is delicious, and when water goes down your drain, we remove the dirty stuff to protect the environment and the San Francisco Bay.

The spirit of innovation runs deep at EBMUD. A century ago, we built the world’s highest concrete arch dam and a gravity-fed aqueduct system to convey snowmelt 90 miles to the people of the East Bay. In the 1950s, our wastewater treatment plant transformed the health of the San Francisco Bay and, in 2012, we turned that plant into North America’s first to produce more renewable energy than is needed to run the facility.
