There’s no mistaking that rumble in the earth. Earthquakes snap us out of the calm we mostly take for granted and shake us into a new reality: response mode.

If you listen to the babble of the Mokelumne River, you’ll hear the songs of life. Birds, trees, wildlife, and fish sing in harmony with the ripples and wakes of fresh water. This river is the source of the East Bay’s drinking water and EBMUD is on a daily mission to keep its vibrant song alive and healthy.

Whether you’re at work or home, asleep or burning the midnight oil, EBMUD is there for you. Hours after the sun goes down, EBMUD employees are at work so you can start your day with water.

In the beautiful Sierra Nevada, a pristine river named Mokelumne breaks free. Carrying snowmelt and rain to the west, its ultimate destination is the Sacramento/ San Joaquin Delta, and then the San Francisco Bay. But well before it reaches its natural outlet, EBMUD’s 345-foot-tall, 1,337-foot-long Pardee Dam walls-off the water’s path and fills in Pardee Reservoir. From Pardee Reservoir, the East Bay drinks.

EBMUD salutes all the chefs out there baking, roasting and frying away, but we also want to share with you a recipe that could spell disaster in your home. We’re talking about clogged drains that could lead to sewage backups.

EBMUD continuously looks for new ways to improve our work. One area where new collaborations have started to pay off is in paving.

EBMUD customers drink some of the best water on the planet. And the EBMUD team works day and night to protect that water.

Wherever your feet land in the East Bay, you enjoy special proximity to our watershed. It’s closer than you think! When you open your eyes to nature, you can see evidence of water’s journey from the watershed to EBMUD reservoirs, through storm drains to creeks, into homes and businesses, from sinks to sewers, and back out as wastewater, which EBMUD cleans and releases to the San Francisco Bay.
