Purchase a trail permit
- If you do not have an EBMUD ID and password, please create one (this will assist you in the future with renewing your permit, viewing past transactions, etc.) To proceed without creating an ID and password, click Proceed as guest.
- Enter your information in the areas provided. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*)
- Indicate where you will use your permit: East Bay watershed, Mokelumne or Both
- Indicate the primary use for your permit: Hiking, Horseback riding or Both.
- Enter your billing address
- Indicate whether or not your mailing address is the same as the billing address. If it is different, please enter the address where you want your permit mailed
- Check the box to indicate that you have read and agree to the Trail Use Rules and Conditions
- Click Continue
- Review the information
- Click Purchase
- Enter payment information
- Click Pay Now (do not refresh the page or click the browser back button)
- Click My Receipt
- Click Print Permit
- Follow the instructions on how to fold the permit to wallet size.
- Note that the permit must be carried on your person at all times while on EBMUD trails
Renew a trail permit
- Log in with your EBMUD ID and password (you may proceed as a guest if you wish).
- Click View History
- Update/change any new information on the permit detail page
- Check the box at the bottom to indicate that you have read and agree to the Trail Use Rules and Conditions
- Click Continue
- Review the information
- Click Purchase
- Enter payment information
- Click Pay Now (please do not refresh the page or click the back button on your browser)
- Click My Receipt
- Click Print Permit
- Follow the instructions on how to fold the permit to wallet size.
- Note that the permit must be carried on your person at all times while on EBMUD trails

Yes. Two email reminders will be sent – the first email will be sent 30 days before expiration and the second will be sent 7 days before expiration.
If you receive a message indicating your permit has been revoked, please call 209-772-8204 or email recreate@ebmud.com for assistance. Our office hours are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays).
Permit holders must be at least 18 years old.
With an EBMUD Trail Use Permit, you may take all of your immediate family members and up to three guests.
If you wish to take more than three people, you may apply for a Trail Leader Permit. To apply for or renew a Trail Leader permit, please email Watershed & Recreation or call 510-287-0459 or the East Bay trails or 209-772-8204 for the Mokelumne area trails. A Trail Leader Permit allows the permit holder to take up to 30 people on the trails.

No. There will be signs clearly indicating which areas are closed to the public.
Dogs are allowed on the following East Bay trails: Oursan Trail, Hampton Trail and Kings Canyon Loop. Dogs must be kept on-leash at all times.
In the Sierra foothills area, dogs are allowed on a section of the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail accessed from Camanche South Shore Staging Area.
In the East Bay, the Pinole Valley and the Eagle's Nest Multi-Use Trails are open to bicycles. In the Mokelumne watershed, no bicycles are allowed on any of our trails.

No. Lafayette Reservoir does not require a permit to walk the trails; however, a permit to hike other EBMUD trails may be purchased in the Visitor Center.
No. EBMUD Trail Use Permits are not transferrable. If someone other than you is caught using your permit, you may both be subject to fines, permit revocation or both.
You may renew your permit up to 60 days before it expires.
