Wastewater treatment provides essential benefits for our community. It prevents the spread of diseases, supports a healthy ecosystem and keeps San Francisco Bay clean for recreation.
As EBMUD celebrates 75 years of wastewater service, our focus is on meeting the challenges of the next era by investing in our pumps, plants and critical systems. Together, these investments will strengthen reliability, support cleaner water, and prepare EBMUD’s wastewater system for generations to come.
Here’s a look at key improvements in the works:
Dewatering Building

-
This facility creates biosolids that can be recycled as beneficial soil amendments
-
Upgrades will make the building more reliable and efficient while reducing operating costs
Digesters

- Digesters turn organic waste into renewable energy that helps power the treatment plant
- Improvements to these 50- to 75-year-old tanks will include roof and wall repairs, new monitoring equipment, and safety upgrades
Influent Pump Station

-
Built in 1951, this facility moves wastewater from sewer interceptor pipes into our plant for treatment
-
Improvements will allow quick service recovery after a major earthquake or power outage
Secondary Reactors

-
Oxygen reactors critical to biological treatment will see improvements to aging concrete, piping and electrical equipment needed to meet future nitrogen removal requirements
Oxygen Plant

-
Modern digital controls and automation will replace obsolete analog equipment
-
EBMUD will replace corroded piping and upgrade safety controls
