Fire hydrant overview
The EBMUD water system includes about 31,000 public fire hydrants in a 332-square-mile service area in the East Bay. EBMUD repairs or replaces fire hydrants as necessary, in coordination with local fire agencies. Additionally, EBMUD inspects fire hydrants in high-risk fire zones to ensure accessibility.
For operational requirements, water quality or in support of EBMUD’s Capital Improvement Program, EBMUD will conduct hydrant flow tests to estimate system flow and pressure. Some fire agencies also perform hydrant flow tests to verify availability. This data is shared with EBMUD for inclusion in a larger database.
About the fire hydrant flow test map
The map linked below displays the location of all hydrants within EBMUD’s water system and includes available data for hydrants that have been tested. Data is presented as static and residual pressure in pounds per square (psi), flow rate in gallons per minute (gpm), and location.
Not for design
The fire hydrant flow test data is not to be used for fire sprinkler system design, to confirm fire hydrant flow capacity, to meet code requirements, or support insurance documentation. The data is provided as a courtesy and is representative of a specific set of water distribution system conditions at the time of the fire hydrant test. These conditions are subject to continuous change and may not be conservative enough for fire protection system design.
