EBMUD Board of Directors elects Lesa R. McIntosh as President and William B. Patterson as Vice President

OAKLAND – On January 9, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Board of Directors unanimously elected Lesa R. McIntosh President of the seven-member EBMUD Board of Directors. The Board also unanimously elected William B. Patterson as Board Vice President.

McIntosh resides in the City of Richmond and represents EBMUD’s Ward 1, which includes Crockett, Hercules, Rodeo, and San Pablo, portions of Richmond and Pinole, and the communities of North Richmond and Selby. She is the first African American woman elected to serve as Vice President and President of the Board. President McIntosh is an attorney and has been a sole practitioner in the city of Richmond for over 30 years.

President McIntosh, who will lead the Board as EBMUD begins its second century of service, is confident that EBMUD’s dedication to public service and innovation will help EBMUD tackle the pressing issues facing water and wastewater utilities nationwide.

“There are many challenges ahead of us as a water district as we continue to address climate change, protect our water rights, manage our finances responsibly, focus on diversity and workforce development, and address aging infrastructure,” McIntosh said. “We have to remain vigilant, and work to represent our constituents well. As Board President, I look forward to working with my fellow Board members and EBMUD staff to get things done.”

Patterson, a pioneering civil rights leader and resident of Oakland, represents EBMUD’s Ward 6, which includes East Oakland Hills and Lake Merritt south to the San Leandro border.

Patterson was appointed to the Board in 1997 and has previously served as Board President and as Vice President. Patterson said he is eager to work with EBMUD’s committed workforce to advance the utility’s priorities including ensuring resilient water supplies, protecting natural resources, and providing high-quality service to the East Bay community.

“We will make this year the best, working together to carry forward the key mission of EBMUD: to deliver quality water supplies to the people of the East Bay and provide wastewater treatment to protect the San Francisco Bay,” said Vice President Patterson. “I will continue to serve my constituents and am proud that we have leadership on top who has their best interests in mind.”
