OAKLAND - The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) announces the release of “H2Flow en Español,” a Spanish-language water song and music video featuring Oakland artists, the Grammy-winning Alphabet Rockers, and Mexican lyricist Gina Madrid.
This unique musical collaboration taps into the artistic spirit of the East Bay. It is part of EBMUD’s broader effort to make water and environmental education accessible and engaging for all.
“We’re fortunate to have the best-tasting water in California right here in the East Bay,” said EBMUD Board President Luz Gómez. “We want our community to feel proud and confident to turn on the tap, because our water is truly special. It’s even worth singing about.”
The video, produced by Nino Fernandez, centers on Highland Community School in East Oakland, home to a new mural that illustrates the journey of water from the Mokelumne Watershed in the Sierra Nevada foothills to East Bay neighborhoods. Created by Oakland graffiti artists DJ Agana and Norman “Vogue” Chuck, the mural features the song’s bilingual message “Agua es de todos” (“Water is for all of us”). Through fast-paced rhymes, the artists move through the Port of Oakland, the Fruitvale neighborhood and Highland Community School’s playground and soccer field, celebrating the city, its young people and the many ways we interact with water.
"I’m from the East Bay, and I didn’t know that we have clean and safe water,” said artist Gina Madrid. "Many people don’t know they can drink straight from the tap. I’m proud to work with the Alphabet Rockers and EBMUD to create something that brings awareness to our Latin community.”
Madrid raps about the immense effort to filter, treat and test the water, singing, “Gota a gota, el empeño no se agota” (“drop by drop, the effort won’t stop”), while singers Kaitlin McGaw and Tommy Soulati Shepherd, of the Alphabet Rockers, bring back the original song’s most memorable hook: “tap that tap.”
“We witnessed the first song reach a global audience, and now our hope is that this song connects with every family, no matter who you are, in the East Bay,” said McGaw. “Water is for everybody, and we all have a role to play, protecting it, reducing plastic and teaching the next generation.”
The Spanish single builds on the award-winning success of the original song “H2Flow,” which reached 183,000 YouTube views and is part EBMUD’s education programming that includes watershed tours for students, school presentations and teacher trainings.
