June marks the 50th anniversary of EBMUD’s Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area, a destination that draws over a million visitors a year looking to hike, picnic, fish, or just enjoy a moment of solitude overlooking the water.

The 928-acre Lafayette Reservoir has picnic areas, a playground, boat rentals and meadows for running around. But the most popular feature is the paved 2.7-mile loop around the reservoir. Visitors get exercise while enjoying views of rolling hills.

If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, take a detour by the playground or the ends of the parking lot and take the Rim Trail, a more rigorous 4.7-mile loop that rewards hikers with spectacular views of the San Ramon Valley, Mount Diablo and a bird’s eye view of the reservoir.
