South Reservoir Replacement

EBMUD is replacing the South Reservoir, located at the north end of Gail Drive near Grove Way in Castro Valley. Following the demolition of the aged structure, EBMUD will construct one 8.5 million gallon water storage tank within the footprint of the existing reservoir basin. This reservoir replacement will improve water quality and increase reliability by removing excess storage. The new reservoir will be designed to meet current seismic design standards.

When the work is complete, there will be no significant change to the views of the reservoir from surrounding residences, most of the existing embankment slopes will remain in place. Additional landscape screening will be planted along the western and southeast edges of the reservoir site perimeter to enhance existing screening of views of the new tank from residents along Grove Way, Gail Drive, and Gary Drive.

EBMUD will reuse as much of the old reservoir materials as possible to minimize truck traffic; however, there will be some truck traffic to haul materials, debris and equipment to and from the site. A traffic control plan will be prepared and, if needed, flaggers and other means of traffic management will be provided. Construction traffic is expected to travel along Foothill Boulevard to Grove Way.

Workplan and schedule

Demolition of the reservoir was completed in December 2015. Construction of the new reservoir began inĀ April 2017 and will take approximately two years to complete. The South Reservoir will be completed in the fall of 2019. Construction hours are Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
