3rd Street Sewer Interceptor Rehabilitation Project Phase 2

Project Details

EBMUD will rehabilitate over 4,000 feet of large sewer interceptor (pipe) along 3rd Street in Oakland. The pipe is approximately 60 years old and heavily corroded. EBMUD will use a method called sliplining, where new pipe measuring eight feet in diameter is inserted into the existing pipe via strategically-located pits. This trenchless method minimizes excavation and significantly reduces construction time and disturbance.

Workplan and schedule

For approximately ten months between February and November 2019, portions of 3rd Street will be impacted by closures and lane realignments.

  • Roadways, parking, and dedicated bike lanes will be impacted near Union Street and Filbert Street.
  • Flaggers will direct traffic on Myrtle Street one direction at a time between 3rd Street and the train tracks.
  • Expected regular work hours will be Monday through Friday, 4am-3:30pm

EBMUD will maintain detours, vehicle access for local businesses, and sidewalk access at all times. More details on construction will be available soon.
