Walnut Creek - San Ramon Valley Improvement Project

Reliable water supplies are critical for the residents and businesses that EBMUD serves. Construction of the Walnut Creek-San Ramon Valley Improvement Project began in 2002 and is expected to be complete in 2006. Right now, local reservoirs can get drawn to low levels after repeated hot days. This project will provide water reserves for firefighters and maintain water pressure for customers during prolonged hot periods. When construction is completed, your water system will be more reliable and will continue to deliver safe, high quality water.

Watch for current construction information on this site. EBMUD appreciates your patience during this important construction project. If you have questions about this project, please call the Project Hotline (925) 935-6049 or email mblackwe@ebmud.com.

Project Overview

EBMUD is improving a water treatment plant in Walnut Creek, installing four miles of large-diameter transmission pipeline and a one-mile tunnel in Walnut Creek and Alamo, and upgrading a pumping plant in Alamo.

The transmission pipe will follow the Iron Horse Trail alignment through part of southern Walnut Creek and Alamo.

EBMUD is committed to keeping temporary construction impacts such as dust, noise, and traffic delays to a minimum. Measures we are taking include having water trucks on site to keep dust down, establishing work hours and a project schedule that is sensitive to neighbors, controlling noise and traffic, making sure neighbors and trail users are informed, and quickly resolving any problems. A Community Liaison is also available to answer any questions or concerns about construction work.

Alamo

Danville Pumping Plant in Alamo
Construction is complete at the EBMUD pumping plant at 2055 Danville Boulevard in Alamo just south of the Rudgear Road Trailhead next to the Iron Horse Trail.  This improvement allows EBMUD to move water supplies more efficiently coming from the Walnut Creek Water Treatment Plant to help meet customer needs.

Water Treatment Plant Upgrades
EBMUD is modernizing the water treatment plant on Larkey Lane in Walnut Creek to improve storage and treatment facilities that serve EBMUD’s central Contra Costa County customers. Work at the Walnut Creek Treatment plant started in February 2002 and is on schedule to be completed in 2006.

The majority of the improvements are complete and in service. Remaining work includes final testing of the reclamation facility and removal of the temporary tank.

Northern Transmission Pipeline and Tunnel in Walnut Creek
The pipeline begins in Walnut Creek at Lacassie and N. California Boulevard and heads east to Civic Park, where the tunnel begins. The tunnel extends south to a parking lot on Newell Avenue at the South Broadway intersection and will pick up with a pipeline that continues along the South Broadway Extension to an area under I680. Work on the tunnel and pipeline began in March 2003 and is expected to be complete in 2006. Pipeline construction in the tunnel under Walnut Creek and along the South Broadway extension is in progress.
