Berryman Reservoir Replacement The Berryman Reservoir, located on Euclid Avenue in Berkeley, provided drinking water and fire service to central Berkeley (including the downtown area and the University of California) for over 120 years. The earthen dam forming the reservoir was built in the Hayward fault zone and EBMUD engineering studies revealed that a major seismic event could seriously damage the dam. EBMUD began working to drain the 15-million gallon reservoir in 1998. New facilities and pipelines were constructed, and the reservoir was drained and permanently removed from service in March 2006. Homes and businesses in the area now receive water from Summit Reservoir, located higher in the Berkeley hills, which has available capacity to serve this broader area. EBMUD recently completed geologic fault studies at the site and is currently studying water storage alternatives for the Berryman Reservoir basin. EBMUD will begin the design for a new storage tank at the site in the summer of 2008. Upcoming Project Activities
