Landscape Advisory Committee

The Landscape Advisory Committee (LAC) is a partnership between EBMUD and members of the landscape industry to promote sustainable landscape design, installation, maintenance and management practices.

This committee seeks to support the transition to more drought-resilient landscaping and water supplies.

Who we are

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) formed a partnership with the Landscape Industry to address the challenges of a severe drought in the 1980’s. The LAC brings together professionals from the green industry, including designers, contractors, nursery managers, sod producers, educators, manufacturers, distributors, and property managers. To date, the LAC is the longest EBMUD Board sanctioned committee, and remains actively involved in promoting the transition from traditional landscapes to drought resilient landscapes.

What we do

Our goals are to:

Identify principles and improve practices for managing limited water resources.
Partner with EBMUD Water Conservation staff to create and develop effective programs and incentives related to sustainable landscaping.

Sub Committees

The LAC has created three project-based subcommittees: Professional Development, Technology, and Education and Outreach.  The LAC subcommittees meet monthly to work on projects.

1. The Professional Development Committee’s charge is to deepen and broaden the landscape industry professionals’ knowledge of outdoor water use and water conservation. Currently the group is developing a variety of tools such as on-line links, a peer to peer chat group, and an events calendar.

2. The aim of LAC’s Education and Outreach Committee (EOC) is to develop resources and activities to support homeowners, landscape professionals, municipalities, and businesses to transform traditional landscapes to climate appropriate, sustainable landscapes. The Education and Outreach subcommittee determined existing EBMUD demonstration gardens are an important resource and asset to leverage for this purpose. To support the development of existing EBMUD demonstration gardens, this sub-committee is building stronger connections with the garden managers, identifying areas for garden improvement, providing garden renovation plans, and showcasing qualifying gardens on EBMUD and the California Water Efficiency Partnership websites.

3. The Technology Committee is working on an online Landscape Design Water Budget Calculator to help EBMUD customers determine how much water they can save by converting their existing landscape to a low water use, sustainable design. This online, easy to use Calculator is designed to help EBMUD customers perform the technical calculations contained in Model Water Efficiency Landscape Ordinance (MWELO) in a user friendly format, without complicated, technical calculations or terminology.

Sustainable Landscapes Speaker Series

EBMUD also organizes a bimonthly Sustainable Landscape Speaker Series as part of the LAC General Meeting. The Sustainable Landscape Speaker Series covers topics such as Planting for Biodiversity and Water Conservation, Harvesting Rainwater, Creating Rain Gardens, Irrigation Auditing, etc. EBMUD’s Landscape Advisory Committee’s Sustainable Landscape Series is approved for CEU’s with the Irrigation Association, QWEL, and ReScape California.
