Sierra Trails

Pristine lakes, oak-studded canyons, abundant wildflowers and a wide array of wildlife can all be enjoyed along the 32 miles of EBMUD trails in the Mokelumne Area of the Sierra Foothills. These trails are open for hiking and horseback riding and traverse 31,000 acres of protected watershed along the Mokelumne River.

EBMUD protects these watershed lands to ensure a safe water supply. For this reason, all trail users must follow the use rules and have a valid trail permit issued by EBMUD.

Trails Update - Rich Gulch to Middle Bar trail segment scheduled to open summer 2009!

Patti’s Point to James Bar trail segment scheduled to open summer 2009!

On EBMUD lands, there is now 25.3 miles of continuous Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail open to the public for hiking and horseback-riding. As with all of EBMUD’s trails, access (through one of the staging areas) requires an EBMUD trail permit. The recently connected stretch between the Camanche South Shore Staging Area and the Campo Seco Staging Area is 12.4 miles. A savvy option for hikers or trail riders is to plan ahead with another group, where half of the party starts at the Camanche South Shore Staging Area (heading east) while the other half starts at the Campo Seco Staging Area (heading west). Somewhere in the middle the groups exchange vehicle keys and when the trek is completed the parties rendezvous at a predetermined location (like a group campground or nearby restaurant to have dinner) and swap vehicles.
