School Curricula and Materials

EBMUD school materials are consistent with the requirements of the California Department of Education's frameworks in science and social science to assure that Project WATER is educationally sound and easily incorporated into required instruction.  View the state standards correlations for the publications listed below. 

The publications below are available free to teachers in schools served by EBMUD and for purchase by agencies and schools not served by EBMUD.

  • Water...Save It For What You Love (K-1) is an 8-page coloring book with simple sentences about water on the bottom of each page.

 

  • Water PlayWater Play (grades 2-3) is a colorful, 16-page workbook featuring water awareness activities in a variety of subjects, especially language arts. The teacher guide includes lesson notes, answers, references and blackline masters. A Spanish-language version, Juegos de Agua, is also available.

 

 

  • The Further Adventures of Captain Hydro (grades 6-9) is a 16-page full-color comic book presenting our hero in his continuing battle with the Water Bandit. Two different teacher activity guides are available for use with the Further Adventures comic book or as stand-alone curricula. 

 

  • The Ancient Civilizations teacher guide contains seven lessons, reproducible worksheets, answers and glossary in 25 pages devoted to world history and geography. The 50-page teacher activity guide in Science introduces students to water and some of its properties through hands-on science lessons. The book has seven fully developed lesson plans including preparation, reading, lab activity and reproducible student pages all focused on scientific concepts.

 

  • Captain HydroThe Official Captain Hydro Water 
    Conservation Workbook
     
    (grades 5-8) is a 40-page workbook including a 10-page comic story featuring Captain Hydro, hero of water conservation, as he battles his relentless foe, the Water Bandit. This workbook presents a short course on water concentrated in the subject areas of science and social science. Thirty pages of readings, worksheets, projects and glossary are divided into sections on The Water Cycle, The Uses of Water, and Water Conservation and Management. The teacher guide provides 15 fully developed lesson plans, answers and references. A Spanish-language version, El Capitán Tlaloc, is also available.

 

  • Hydro Kits (which include Captain Hydro Conserver cards, buttons, rulers and litterbags) and Captain Hydro and El Capitán Tlaloc posters are available. These can be used as interest stimulators and prizes.

 

  • PollutoThe Tardy Twins Meet Polluto (grades 4-8) is an 11-page, full-color comic book featuring junior detectives who discover water pollution. They track the monster, Polluto, to the EBMUD Wastewater Treatment Plant and learn about the processes that prevent Polluto from entering San Francisco Bay. The 20-page teacher's guide contains concepts and activities aligned with the content matrices of the California Science and Mathematics Frameworks, grades six through nine. The guide describes and demonstrates some of the steps involved in cleaning water of both visible and invisible pollutants and teaches how scientists measure minute quantities of contaminants.

Two publications devoted exclusively to facts about the East Bay Municipal Utility District are Water, Where It Comes From And Where It Goes (primary grades) also available in Spanish, and More About Water: Where It Comes From, Where It Goes  (grades 5-12). Both of these illustrated booklets explain where EBMUD gets its water and how it is treated, stored and delivered to customers. More About Water also includes information about the wastewater system and career fields in the water industry.
