School Garden Program

Practicing recycling and conservation in  school gardens.

EBMUD's School Garden Program is an interagency approach to educating teachers, students and the community about the role that water plays in the garden.  Through training workshops, educators learn how to practice water conservation and integrated pest management techniques to reduce water and pesticide use in the garden.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Teach about the role that water plays in the garden through hands-on activities.

  • Instill an appreciation for water and the environment in future generations.

  • Demonstrate and promote the use of water-wise gardening methods.

  • Encourage environmental stewardship.

EBMUD provides the following support for water-wise school garden projects:

  • Sponsorship of "Kids in Gardens" workshops for teachers, covering a variety of gardening topics.

  • Small grants for water-wise school garden projects located inside EBMUD's service area.

  • Resource materials.

Educators interested in this program should attend a "Kids in Gardens" workshop to obtain training, resource materials and grant information.  Workshop attendance is required in order to apply for EBMUD grant assistance.  These innovative workshops and EBMUD's school garden grants are administered by the nonprofit The Watershed Project.
