Pollution Prevention in Schools
EBMUD offers resources to help schools, colleges and universities reduce water pollution.
In-Class Materials
EBMUD's Tardy Twins Meet Polluto is a comic book for students to learn about wastewater treatment and preventing pollution. The comic book and teacher's guide are available for free to teachers in the EBMUD service area.
Cleaning Products
Find healthier cleaning products products through third-party certification programs such as Green Seal, and US EPA's Design for the Environment Program. The US EPA's Schools Chemical Clean-Out Campaign helps K-12 schools reduce toxics.
Pesticides
Many schools and educational institutions now require pest control operators to be certified in more environmentally-friendly pest control known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM). You can look for an IPM-certified pest control operator at Eco-Wise Certified.
Mercury
EBMUD works with schools and higher education institutions to reduce sources of mercury. EBMUD and the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley) conducted a joint Mercury Reduction Program that removed more than 1,200 pounds of mercury waste from the UC Berkeley campus. EBMUD developed a template based on the program’s findings to encourage other agencies to implement a similar program, and also is currently working with second and third level educational institutions in its wastewater service area.
