Multi-family Submeter Retrofit Incentives
Apartment owners can get a rebate up to $250 per dwelling unit by installing submeters. Mobile home parks and condominium/townhouse homeowner associations can get a rebate of up to $150 per unit.
Owners of apartments, mobile homes, condominiums, and townhomes can find it difficult to track individual water use because there are no individual meters for units in a complex. Submeters allow residents and property owners to see if water use is going up or down.
Because submeters encourage conservation, EBMUD offers rebates for submeter installation to multi-family property owners who:
- install water meters on individual dwelling units,
- meter and bill residents for water,
- install water-efficient toilets, showerheads, and faucet aerators when required.
Rebate amounts for apartment owners are higher than condos and townhouses since they are required to do mandatory improvements to bring the dwelling unit up to water conservation standards.
Property owners also may be eligible for rebates for toilets. EBMUD offers water-efficient showerheads and faucet aerators free of charge.
EBMUD's Submeter Retrofit Incentive Program is offered because of positive findings from its Multi-Family Submetering and Billing Allocation Study, which found potential water savings after investigating metering technology and billing programs.
The offer is good for purchases made July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014, and is not retroactive.
See program application below for program details. Application must be completed and approved before work begins.
