Security Update Security
increased at EBMUD facilities Ensuring the safety of public water supplies is EBMUD’s top priority. With our security at the highest appropriate levels based on guidance from law enforcement and utility industry security experts, and ongoing vigilance by employees, our customers should know that we are protecting the water and wastewater systems and the public’s water supply. EBMUD has increased security at our water and wastewater facilities, following recommendations of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the American Water Works Association and the California Office of Emergency Services. These agencies advise water and wastewater systems to guard against intrusion, review emergency response plans, and increase vigilance. EBMUD has taken all these steps and more. Multi-barrier approach protects the water supply Our security efforts include multiple methods of controlling access to our facilities. EBMUD uses a multi-barrier approach–with physical, chemical and operational controls–to safeguard the water we provide to consumers. EBMUD is working with federal, state and local law enforcement and utility organizations to assess potential threats and minimize risks. In the event of any unusual circumstance, EBMUD would immediately cut off the water source, determine the cause of the problem and issue appropriate public notices. We will continue to add security measures as warranted to protect against potential terrorism. Enhancing security While
terrorism experts say water and wastewater systems have a low relative
likelihood of experiencing terrorist acts, they encourage utilities to
review their security and make appropriate improvements. EBMUD is actively
reviewing its security and bolstering systems against physical
intrusion. Many security enhancements won’t be announced. You can
be sure that EBMUD staff is continually assessing physical security
programs. Our Emergency Operations Team, which manages emergency
responses, meets routinely and is ready to respond. The EBMUD team has
taken a leadership role in convening Bay Area and statewide utility forums
to assess security measures to protect all of California’s drinking
water supplies. EBMUD’s state-of-the-art laboratory works
with experts from other area laboratories and the California Department of
Health Services to protect water quality. How You Can Help Be vigilant for anything out of the ordinary around EBMUD facilities. If your normal business takes you past EBMUD reservoirs, treatment plants, or other facilities and you see anything unusual or notice open and/or unlocked gates, promptly report it to EBMUD at 1-866-403-2683 or to your local law enforcement officers. Help EBMUD educate your community about water safety. EBMUD staff is available to provide briefings on water safety issues to public agencies and community groups. For more information or to schedule a briefing, contact EBMUD’s Speakers Bureau at (510) 287-0138. |
