Non-Potable Water Project Information
Non-potable water is water that is not treated to drinking water standards and is not meant for human consumption. In addition to recycled water (highly treated wastewater), EBMUD uses other sources of non-potable water, such as raw (untreated) water from reservoirs for irrigation and other purposes.
EBMUD uses non-potable water supplies (that are not recycled water), such as reusing backwash water from EBMUD potable water filter plants (since 1970); raw (i.e., untreated) water from Lake Chabot for irrigating two golf courses (Lake Chabot Golf Course in Oakland and Willow Park Golf Course in Castro Valley). The District also supplies untreated water to irrigate Sunset View Cemetery in Kensington.
These non-potable water applications amount to almost 2 MGD of additional wise water use.
